    Local roundup: Doran named Mitchell women's lacrosse coach

    New London — Devyne Doran, an assistant at Eastern Connecticut State University for two seasons, was named head coach of the Mitchell College women's lacrosse program on Tuesday.

    Doran replaces Erika Blozie, who guided the Mariners for three seasons, including a 2-10 record in 2019.

    Mitchell will return eight starters and 13 letter winners from that team.

    Doran, a native of South Kingstown, R.I., played for seasons at ECSU, graduating in 2017 and immediately joining the Warriors' coach staff. She served as recruiting coordinator among her other coaching duties and helped produce eight all-conference and nine all-academic selections during her two seasons on staff.

    She was a four-year starter for Eastern. She was twice named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Year (2016 and 2017) and was an All-LEC conference pick three times.

    Junior Legion baseball

    • Nick Houle and Jored Wilhelm combined to pitch a no-hitter as Northeast defeated Niantic 2-0 in a Junior Legion state tournament game at Tolland High School past Niantic 2-0. Houle struck out 14 over 6.2 innings. Nathan Licitra pitched well in defeat for Niantic, allowing only six hits while walking one and striking out seven. Niantic will play at West Hartford on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

    Senior League (13-15) softball

    • Ledyard finished 1-3 in the pool play portion of the Senior League (13-15) East Regional in Worcester, Mass. The Connecticut champions lost to host Worcester 15-5 on Monday and were beaten by Massachusetts state champion Lynn 8-1 on Tuesday. Ledyard will face unbeaten Pennsylvania in the tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

    In the loss to Worcester, Shailynn Williams had three hits and scored a run while Codee Carroll had two hits and, two RBI and a run scored, and Abby Fowler added two hits. In the loss to Lynn, Mart Creekmore had two hits and scored a run while Fowler and Williams also had hits.

    DAZ tournament (11-12)

    • East Lyme defeated Ledyard 10-0 on Monday in the Dominick A. Zuliani tournament in Groton. Winning pitcher Tanner O'Brien struck out five while A.J. Montejano had a triple and double, and Ben Quagan also tripled. Cam Weber had a double for Ledyard.
