    Local roundup: Occhialini wins debut as Montville boys' soccer coach

    Putnam — Six players scored as Montville made new head coach Anthony Occhialini a success in his debut as the Indians defeated Putnam 7-0 in a boys' soccer match on Friday.

    Liam Cook scored twice and Cesar Amaya had a goal and three assists, while Zak Keenan, Ayden Frechette, Aaron Muncaster and Tucker Doyle also tallied goals. Isaiah Gallagher needed one save for the shutout. The Clippers are 0-2.

    In other matches:

    • Sam Montalto scored a pair of goals and Tyler Fidrych had two assists as Stonington opened its season with a 3-0 win over Bacon Academy. Ethan Allen-Fernandez also scored for the Bears while Billy de Castro had an assist.

    • Martin Arvidson had 13 saves for St. Bernard in a 5-0 home loss to Lyman Memorial in the season opener for both teams.

    • Wheeler trailed by two goals at the half and couldn't recover in a 3-0 loss to Windham at home. Bowen Baker had eight saves for the Lions (0-1), who were outshot, 12-10. The Whippets are 1-0.

    • Norwich Tech, which started three freshmen, opened its season with a 2-0 win over Vinal Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Kenny McKenna chipped a shot over the Vinal Tech goalkeeper from 40 yards out for the first goal and Ben McKenzie, assisted by freshman Zach Lamitie, scored in the second half.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Marlo Sim had eight digs and four aces to highlight Fitch's 25-13, 25-21 and 25-8 win over Valley Regional in the season opener. Karly Morales added 16 assists for the Falcons while Nora Ryan had 14 kills and four aces and Emma Kohrt had seven digs.

    • Morgan rallied for a 3-1 victory over New London. The Huskies dropped the first game 26-24 before winning the next three 25-17, 25-10, 25-19. Chaylet Cintron had four aces, three assists and three kills for the Whalers while Jayden Burns added three aces and two kills, Caylee Parker had three aces, six kills and three blocks, and Stacy Rivera had six assists.

    H.S. swimming

    • Elyse Gathy and Lily Watson won two events for Waterford, which lost to Woodland 105-75 in its season opener. Watson won the 50-meter freestyle (29.01 seconds) and 100 butterfly (1:11.44) for the Lancers while Gathy captured the 200 free (2:23.99) and 100 backstroke (1:13.25). Freshman Camille Caldrello added a win in the diving competition (211.20 points) for Waterford and qualified for the Class S state meet.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Bridget O'Leary scored three goals as Fitch beat St. Mary Academy Bay View (R.I.) 3-0. Maggie O'Leary and Jessica Russo had assists for the Falcons (1-1). 

    College field hockey

    • Maddy Wray's goal with 44 seconds remaining in regulation brought UConn to within one, but No. 3 UConn lost its first game of the year, 3-2 to No. 11 Michigan. The Wolverines (3-2) held a 2-0 lead at halftime before Svea Boker scored in the third quarter to bring the Huskies (4-1) to within one. Michigan took a 3-1 lead with 4 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in the game.

    Wolves deal for Durston

    • The New England Black Wolves have acquired veteran forward Jordan Durston from the New York Riptide, a National Lacrosse League expansion team, in exchange for Ryan Fournier, Myles Jones and the 24th pick in the upcoming NLL Draft. Durston, 25, played last season with the Buffalo Bandits where he scored 15 goals and finished with 47 total points. He went to New York in the NLL Expansion Draft on July 9.

    College golf

    • Mitchell College finished third in a tri-match on Thursday at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton. Wentworth won with 308, Dean College had 333 and Mitchell shot 346. Michael McCarthy led Mitchell with a 5-over-par 76, good for a second-place tie. Mitchell also got a 77 from Nick Knisel and a 92 from Michael Izzo.
