    Witkowski leads Coast Guard past Merchant Marine

    New London — Packy Witkowski had a season-high 33 points as Coast Guard beat archrival Merchant Marine 80-69 in a nonleague men's basketball game on Sunday.

    Coast Guard evens its record a 4-4 as it reaches the holiday break and the Bears win another point for the 2019-'20 Superintendent's Trophy, taking a 6-1 lead into the second semester.

    Witkowski was 9-for-15 from 3-point range and was one shy of his own school record of 10 set last year in a win over Connecticut College.

    Jason Frazer added 18 points as he made 5 of 11 from 3-point range as the Bears tied a season-high with 15 3-pointers. Noah Baldez led the Bears with a game-high eight rebounds and five assists. James Walsh led the Mariners (3-4) with 16 points.

    In other games:

    • Brewster Academy improved to 9-0 and handed St. Thomas More its first loss of the season, 82-81. Jared Garcia had 25 points and 15 rebounds and Jair Currie had 22 points and five assists for T-More (8-1).  

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard took first place in 14 events of 15 events during a dominating performance to win the Connecticut Cup on Saturday at Wesleyan University. The Bears, ranked No. 18 in the nation, finished with 686 points to easily defeat Connecticut College, which placed second with 498.5 points.

    Coast Guard had four double winners. Eric Fuhs won the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.58 seconds and 50 breast in 26.77, while Joe Rodriguez won the 50 freestyle (20.37) and 100 free (46.79), Connor Shenk won the 50 backstroke (24.38) and 100 back (52.57), and Marshall Seguin won the 3-meter diving (262.5 points) and 1-meter diving (236.25) competitions.

    The Bears also picked up wins from Devin McClure in the 200 free (1:43.07), Derek Ledford in the 100 butterfly (52.34), John Feliz in the 500 free (4:45.57), Tyler Dominick in the 50 fly (23.19), the 200 medley relay team of Shenk, Fuhs, Dominick and Rodriguez (1:33.13) and the 200 free relay team of Jack Stone, McClure, Dominick and Rodriguez (1:26.02).

    For Conn, Dash Huner won the 100 individual medley (55.21) and was third in the 100 fly (53.19) while Charlie Adl was second in the 200 free (1:44.28) as were Colin Merrll in the 400 IM (4:17.30) and the 200 free relay team of Adl, Jack Kittay, Julien Legros and Mitchell Lockwood (1:26.98).

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard edged Conn College 520.5-513.5 to win the Connecticut Cup on Saturday at Wesleyan. Josie McGuire and Lindsey Blake led the Bears by finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle and 500 free. McGuire won the 200 free (1:56.15) and 500 free (5:09.08) with Blake second in both, the 200 free in 1:58.96 and the 500 in 5:11.68. Coast Guard also picked up seconds from Taylor Young in the 1-meter dive (200.50 points) and Natalie Yurgil in the 3-meter dive (193.90).

    For Conn, which had won four straight titles, Tiernan Shea won the 50 backstroke (27.27) and 100 back (57.78), while Maddie Ford captured the 50 free (24.81), Anika Svoboda won the 100 free (54.70) and the 200 free relay team of Vaughn Ammon, Kenzie Healy, Svoboda and Ford won in 1:39.86.

    Women's squash

    • No. 24 Conn College improved to 5-3 with 9-0 wins over Smith and Wellesley. Tanya Mendoza, Noelle Giuliano, Birgitta Salvesen-Quinn and Angela Cao were among the winners for Conn.

    Road racing

    • Steven deCastro of Pawcatuck won the Pearl Harbor Masters 5.2-mile race in Waterford with a time of 32:40. Linda Spooner of Sturbridge, Mass., was the top women's finisher, with a third-place finish in 34:34.

    Brent Wiltshire of Stonington finished second with a time of 33:14. Also finishing in the top 10 were William Finlayson of Higganum (35:40), Antone Debettencourt of Westerly (36:37), Dave Chameider of Torrington (37:36), Alison Gallerani of Uncasville (37:42), Craig Beers of Wethersfield (38:05), Melanie Diamanti of Pawcatuck (38:13) and Paul Vinci of Westbrook (38:30).
