    Local colleges: CGA's Detwiler wins title at All-Academy Championships

    Colorado Springs, Col. — Coast Guard Academy's Paul Detwiler won the 184-pound championship and the Bears finished fourth in the seven-team All-Academy Championships wrestling meet on Saturday at the Air Force Academy.

    The annual event features each service academy from Divisions I, II and III.

    Coast Guard, ranked 10th in Division III, had 47.5 points to finish first among Div. III schools. Division I schools occupied the top three spots. Navy won with 117.5, Air Force was second (116.5) and Virginia Military Academy was third (48).

    Detwiler beat Air Force's Jacob Thompson in the final 4-1 to improve to 20-0 this season. Coast Guard got a second-place finish from Nick Moreno at 165, a third-place finish from heavyweight Patrick Irwin and fourth-place finishes from Caden Mareno (141) and Jon Wagner (197).

    Men's basketball

    • Malik Chase scored a career-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers, as Mitchell College won its third straight game with a 66-63 win over Elms College in the New England Collegiate Conference. Matt Fink and Brendan Miller added 11 points apiece for the Mariners (7-11, 4-1), who have now won five of their last six games.

    • Cyrus Sprague scored 13 points to help lead Avery Point to a 64-56 win over Springfield Tech. Waterford's Trevor Yeomans had 12 points and seven rebounds, East Lyme's J.R. Gandenberger scored 10 and Sprague had four assists and three steals for the Pointers (7-8).

    • St. Thomas More finished third in the Bridgton Winter Classic, defeating Hyde School of Maine 116-83 in the consolation game. The Chancellors lost 82-62 to host Bridgton Academy in the first round Friday night as Chris Manon scored 18 points while Jared Garcia, Zeke Blauner and Derrius Ward added eight points apiece.

    Women's basketball

    • Kelsey Hernandez scored 17 as Mitchell beat Elms 72-56 in the NECC. Amina Wiley had 15 points and six rebounds, Le'Sandra Turner scored 14 and Inanna Rice came off the bench for 12 points for the Mariners (10-8, 6-2). 

    • Jacqueline Ward had a career and game-high 21 points and Coast Guard used a late 7-0 run as the Bears picked up their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference win of the season, beating Emerson 79-70. Annabella Farabaugh added 17 points and Breanna Wood scored 11 for Coast Guard (12-6, 1-2) and Kyra Hartman had 10 rebounds.

    • Peace Kabari scored nine of her 22 points in the final minutes as Trinity pulled away for a 60-57 win over Connecticut College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Sami Ashton had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Claire Gulbin scored 11 for Conn (6-10, 1-3). 

    Men's hockey

    • Nick Jermain's second-period goal snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted No. 17 Quinnipiac to a 3-2 win over UConn in the Connecticut Ice Festival at Bridgeport. UConn plays the loser of the Yale-Sacred Heart game in Sunday's consolation at 3:30 p.m. Ruslan Iskahkov and Carter Turnbull had first-period goals for UConn (9-11-4) and Tomas Vomacka made 22 saves.

    • Connor Rodericks made 43 saves as Conn College beat No. 1 Trinity 1-0 in the NESCAC on Friday night. Jacob Moreau scored at the 14:34 mark to give Conn (7-7-1, 3-5-1) the lead and Rodericks and the defense made it stand up. Trinity (12-2-1, 7-1-1) outshot Conn 43-30.

    Women's hockey

    • Freshman Camille Phelan scored the game-tying goal and assisted on the go-ahead goal by Sammi Estes as Conn College defeated Wesleyan 3-1 on Friday night in the NESCAC. Erin Dillon added an insurance goal for the Camels (10-5-1, 4-4-1) and goalie Carly Denora made 13 saves.

    Women's swimming

    • Freshman Taylor Young won both diving events to lead Coast Guard to a 168-50 win over Clark. Young took the 1-meter with 236.17 points and the 3-meter with 218.18. Also winning events for the Bears were Josie McGuire, Lindsey Blake, Missy Rowell, Meghan Bolin, Clare Brinkman, Sophie Furigay, Hannah Fernandes and Sarah Passilla along with the 400 medley relay team of Katie Dennin, Rachel Morello, Ashley Fuller and Passilla. 

    Men's swimming

    • Joe Rodriguez broke his own pool record in the 50-meter freestyle and Marshall Seguin swept the diving events as host Coast Guard beat Clark 165-58. Rodriguez won the 50 with a time of 20.27 and Seguin won the 1-meter with 264.68 points and 3-meter with 270.22. Also winning events for the Bears were Devin McClure, Samuel Chapman, Connor Shenk, John Feliz, Tyler Bland, CJ Omweg, Christian Lower and the 400 medley relay team of Omweg, Eric Fuhs, Derek Ledford and Rodriguez. 

    Men's indoor track

    • Coast Guard's Adam Jibril-Barnes won the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.49 at the Wheaton Invitational. Andre Gallant and Jacob McGlumphy finished in the top two of the mile, with Gallant winning in 4:26.20 and McGlumphy at 4:26.93. Tanner Johannsen won the high jump with at 6-6.75, Ben Zarlengo won the weight throw at 59-9.75 and Javon Wingate was second in the long jump at 21-3.5.
