    Local roundup: East Lyme girls outlast Pomperaug 57-51

    East Lyme — Sophie Dubreuil scored a game-high 26 points as East Lyme outlasted Pomperaug 57-51 in a non-conference girls' basketball game on Monday night.

    Nadia Tarhini added 14 points for the Vikings (6-7), who led 29-22 at the half.

    Maddie Villa scored 19 points for Pomperaug, including four 3-pointers.

    In other games:

    • Tajeah Winston contributed 10 points and eight rebounds in Ledyard's 49-37 loss to Putnam. Sam Money had 11 points and four steals and Tallie Williams added 13 points for the Colonels (3-11).

    • Sophie Byrne and Samarie Delgado each scored 14 points in Grasso Tech's 41-39 loss to O'Brien Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. The Eagles fell to 1-12 overall.

    • Jessica Berens scored a game-high 16 points as Coginchaug defeated Old Lyme 58-31 in the Shoreline Conference. Emily DeRoehn led the Wildcats (7-4) with 14 points.

    Local honors

    • Connecticut Sun all-star center Jonquel Jones and Windham High School boys' soccer star Alfonso Vazquez Villar have been named female and male athletes of the year, respectively, by the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance. Jones will receive the Hank O'Donnell Award and Vazquez Villar the Bill Lee Award during the 79th Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, April 26, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

    The 6-foot-6 Jones led the Sun to the WNBA Finals, winning her second WNBA rebounding title while helping raise thousands of dollars to for her native Bahamas, which wasstruck by Hurricane Dorian in August. Vazquez Villar scored 55 goals to break the state boys' career record with 149 goals, earning all-state, All-New England and All-American honors.

    • Harold Goldberg, who spent 40 years as principal at Clark Lane Middle School in Waterford, will be honored posthumously as a member of the fifth class in the CAS-CIAC Hall of Honor on Thursday, April 23, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. Other inductees include Earle Bidwell, Armand Fabbri, Art Kohs, Tom Murray, Armand Regalbuti, George Synnott and Margaret Williamson. Goldberg served in a variety of CAS-CIAC roles, including become the second middle school principal to be CAS president. He was later named CAS Principal of the Year and was instrumental in the early years of CIAC Unified Sports programs.
