    Local college roundup: Wood leads Coast Guard to victory in OT

    Worcester, Mass. — Breanna Wood had 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds as Coast Guard kept its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament hopes alive with a 90-85 overtime win over Clark on Saturday.

    Also scoring in double figures for the Bears (15-9, 4-5) were Jacqueline Ward (16), Emma Puddington (15), Kyra Hartman (14), Branyelle Carillo (13) and Annabella Farabaugh (11). Puddington sent the game into overtime with a jumper at the buzzer.

    • Old Lyme's Abby Stone had her second straight triple-double as Avery Point beat New Hampshire Tech 111-53. Stone had 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 38 points and 25 rebounds and Ashley Burke had nine points and six assists for the Pointers (14-8). 

    • Mitchell lost to Eastern Nazarene 80-75 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Le'Sandra Turner led the Mariners with 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Amina Wiley had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Sam McKenna scored 14, Kelsey Hernandez had 13 points and Leilani McClellan had seven rebounds and four assists for Mitchell (13-9, 8-3).

    • Conn College ended its season with a 76-52 loss to No. 4 Amherst in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Claire Gulbin scored 11 points while Dana Muckstadt had eight points and six rebounds for Conn (7-17, 2-8). Connecticut lost to Hamilton 61-55 in a NESCAC game Friday night. Gulbin had 20 points, Sami Ashton scored 13 and  Muckstadt had nine points and 11 rebounds.

    Men's basketball

    • Packy Witkowski scored game-high 25 to lead Coast Guard past Clark, 80-64, in a NEWMAC game. It was the fifth straight game that Witkowski scored 25-or-more for the Bears (9-13, 4-8). Noah Baldez had 17 points and nine rebounds and Tyler Perez added 11 points and eight rebounds for Coast Guard, which is trying to qualify for the NEWMAC tournament for the first time since 2011. It leads MIT by one game with two left to play.

    • Cyrus Sprague scored 26 points as Avery Point clinched a spot in the NJCAA Region 21 tournament with a 79-73 win over Mass Bay Community College. Mitchell Holdmeyer had 16 points and seven rebounds and Sprague had six rebounds and five assists for the Pointers.

    • Keigo Kimura scored 15 points and Zeke Blauner 14 in St. Thomas More's  83-73 loss to Northfield Mount Hermon on Friday night.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Coast Guard opened its season with a 13-8 loss to Elizabethtown. Caleb Holdridge, a freshman from Waterford, led the Bears with four goals and two assists. Charles McAllister made 10 saves for Coast Guard. 

    Women's hockey

    • Lauren Klein scored with 40.4 seconds left in regulation for Colby as it tied Conn College, 3-3, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Sammi Estes had scored with 2:15 remaining in regulation to give Conn the lead. Samantha Hunt and Erin Dillon both scored for Conn (13-6-4, 6-5-4) and Abby Wieczorek had 21 saves.

    Conn had its eight-game home unbeaten streak snapped in a 3-1 loss to Colby on Friday night. Ashley Carbone's first-period goal gave Conn a 1-0 lead. Kylie Wilkes and Natalie Witkowski had assists and Carly Denora made 23 saves for Conn.

    Men's hockey

    • Mitchell Fossier scored with 53 seconds left in overtime to give No. 17 Maine its 1-0 win over UConn in a Hockey East game. Jeremy Swayman had 41 saves for Maine (16-10-4, 10-8-2). Tomas Vomacka had 25 saves for the Huskies (12-13-4, 9-8-2).

    Benjamin Freeman had a goal and two assists as UConn beat Maine on Friday night, 3-2, handing the Black Bears their first home loss of the season. Alexander Payusov and Carter Turnbull scored for UConn.

    • Amherst overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat Conn College 3-1 in the NESCAC on Friday night. Ryan Petti, assisted by Jacob Moreau, scored for the Camels (9-10-2, 5-8-2) while goalie Connor Rodericks made 31 saves.

    Women's swimming

    • Conn College was in seventh place after Day 2 of the NESCAC Championships on Friday night at Middlebury College. Conn has 311 points. Conn's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Maddie Ford, Anika Svoboda, Vaughn Ammon and Kenzie Healy finished sixth in 1:35.43 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. Ford added an eighth in the 50 free (24.16) and Ammon was 10th (24.29) for the Camels while freshman Tiernan Shea placed sixth in the 50 backstroke (26.60). Williams leads the team race with 754 points.

    Women's track and field

    • Coast Guard’s Leilani Salang won the weight throw (47 feet, 9.75 inches and Kalea Salang placed fifth (36-6.75) at the Gordon Kelly Invitational. Savannah Olyniec was second in the 5K (19:14.86) while Elizabeth Carter took fourth (19:39.02) for Coast Guard while Kelly Wade was sixth in the long jump (15-10.5) and eighth in the triple jump (32-9.75).

    Men's track and field

    • Adam Jibril-Barnes finished 11th overall in the 60 meter hurdles (8.67) for Coast Guard at the David Hemery Invitational. Josiah Davis finished 23rd to set a school record in the 1,000 meters (2:27.57) for the Bears and Andre Gallant ran the second-fastest time in school history in the 3,000 meters (8:32.87).
