    Local roundup: Stone, Keith lead Avery Point women to victory

    Warwick, R.I. — The Avery Point women's basketball team rallied from a 12-0 deficit to wrap up its regular season with a 71-56 win over Community College of Rhode Island on Sunday.

    The Pointers, ranked 13th in NJCAA Division III, are 18-8 after their sixth straight win. Avery Point plays Bunker Hill Community College in the Region 21 tournament semifinals on Saturday at Brockton, Mass. Old Lyme's Abby Stone had 27 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, Carsen Keith of Preston had 16 points and eight rebounds and Julitza Delgado finished with nine points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

    On Saturday, Former Waterford standout Rebekah Sanders scored 20 points and had 25 rebounds as Avery Point beat Springfield Tech 88-62. Stone had 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds, Delgado scored 14 and Keith had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Pointers.

    Women's squash

    • Conn College's Mikayla Waterhouse rallied from behind to win a five set match to help lift the Camels to a 5-4 victory over St. Lawrence and the program's second consecutive Epps Cup title at the CSA National Championships in New Haven. Trailing 2-1 through three sets, Waterhouse beat Alexandra Limas at the No. 8 position to clinch the title for the Camels. She won by set scores of 10-12, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, and 11-7.

    Margaret Davey, Molly Carabatsos, Birgitta Salvesen-Quinn and Noelle Giuliano also won their matches. Waterhouse was given the Ann Wetzel Award over the weekend. The award is presented annually to a senior who began playing squash in college and has progressed to a high level of skill, demonstrates sound understanding of the game, and exhibits good sportsmanship and a positive demeaner on the court.

    Men's swimming

    • Conn College's Charlie Adl factored into two top-eight finishes on the final day as the Camels finished sixth at the New England Small College Athletic Conference meet. Host Williams won the team title with 1,987.5 points and Conn scored 727.5.

    Adl and teammates Mitchell Lockwood, Neal Mahoney and Marc Stern finished eighth in the 400 freestyle relay, Josh Franco was eighth in the 1,650 freestyle, Lockwood was sixth in the 200 backstroke, Adl was fifth in the 100 freestyle and Stern was seventh in the 200 butterfly.

    • Coast Guard's 400 freestyle relay earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship and placed second leading the Bears to a second place finish at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championship for the fourth straight season. The team of Devin McClure, Dan Jenkins, Tyler Dominick and Joe Rodriguez earned an automatic berth with a time of 3:01.75.

    Eric Fuhs was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.92), Samuel Chapman placed second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:10.42), Ryan Lower broke the school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.42 during the preliminaries and CJ Omweg broke the school record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.03 to place fourth. MIT won the NEWMAC Championship for the 12th straight season this year.

    Fuhs won the 100 breaststroke for the third straight season on Saturday with a time of 55.82. Devin McClure broke the school record and second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.27.

    Christian Lower broke the school record in the 400 IM in preliminaires (3:59.37) and then rebroke it with a time of 3:58.45, to place third. The Bears 200 medley relay of Omweg, Fuhs, Dominick and Rodriguez earned All-NEWMAC honors with a second place finish with a time of 1:30.34.

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard's Sarah Passilla broke the school record in the 100 freestyle to highlight the final of the NEWMAC Championship as the Bears placed sixth as team. Passilla's time of 52.13, the fastest in the preliminaries set the mark, and she placed third with a time of 52.14 in the final.

    Also for the Bears, Josie McGuire placed third in the 1,650 freestyle (17:25.96), Sophie Furigay was third in the 200 backstroke (2:08.06) and the Bears 400 freestyle relay of Passilla, McGuire, Melody Pompay and Lindsay Blake took third in 3:32.16. MIT won the championship for the tenth straight season. McGuire broke the school record and won the 400 IM with a time of 4:28.92 on Saturday and Passilla placed third in the 400 IM in 4:32.69.

     H.S. hockey

    • Will Cannella scored with seven seconds left in regulation as the Eastern CT Eagles beat Wethersfield/Middletown/Rocky Hill/Portland 3-2 on Saturday night. Evan Tower and Steve Turchetta had goals, Wes Williamson made 41 saves, Turchetta had two assists and Kyle Marino, Ryan LoVetere, Cannella and Tower had assists for the Eagles (9-9).

    College baseball

    • UConn beat No. 1 Michigan 9-2 at Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Huskies (3-3) won the weekend series 2-1, winning 8-7 on Friday and losing 14-2 on Saturday. UConn also beat Michigan 7-1 on Feb. 16 at Scottsdale, Ariz.

    Paul Gozzo homered, doubled and drove in three runs, Reggie Crawford was 4-for-4 with a double and scored twice and Kyler Fedko singled and doubled for UConn. Nick Krauth (2-0) earned the win, allowing two hits and a run over five innings with five strikeouts and three walks.    

    Men's hockey

    • Alexander Payusov scored twice as UConn beat Boston University 6-1 in a hockey East game on Saturday night. Benjamin Freeman had a goal and three assists, Tomas Vomacka made 20 saves, Carter Turnbull had three assists and Justin Howell and Zac Robbins also scored for the Huskies (14-13-4, 11-8-2).

    Women's hockey

    • Conn College wrapped up its regular season with a 2-2 tie with Hamilton in a NESCAC game on Saturday. Camille Phelan and Ashley Carbone each scored in the final two minutes of the third period for Conn (13-7-4, 6-6-4) and Carly Denora made 23 saves. Conn is seeded sixth and plays at No. 3 Amherst in the NESCAC tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.

    Women's indoor track

    • Conn College freshman Erica MacSweeney broke the school record in the triple jump for the second time this season in a seventh-place finish on Saturday at the Springfield College Triangle Classic. MacSweeney's jump of 35-feet, 8.75-inches beat the 35-7.25 which she recorded earlier this winter.

    MacSweeney also finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.94 seconds as well as sixth in the long jump with a mark of 15-11.50. Conn's Julia Curran was fourth in the 5,000 (19:32.25) and teammate Riley Peragine was fifth in the 400 (1:03.88).

    Men's indoor track

    • Conn College had a pair of fourth-place finishes on Saturday at the Springfield College Triangle Classic. Joe Walewski finished the 5,000-meter run in 16:30.25, while Ian McAleer completed the 200 in 23.21 seconds.
