    Local roundup: Local players named to all-state girls' hoop, gymnastics teams

    Sarah Ericson and Jenissa Varela from Norwich Free Academy were both named to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s All-State Girls Basketball Class LL team on Tuesday.

    Ericson and Varela, both seniors, helped the Wildcats finish 13-0, win the Eastern Connecticut Conference South Division tournament title, and earn the number one ranking in the GameTimeCT/New Haven Register Top 10 poll.

    Alyssa Virtue of Fitch was named to the Class L team while Killingly’s Emma Carpenter and Hannah Grudzien and Milena Walker of Waterford both earned Class MM honors. Adalyse Gonzalez of Windham and Maya Hillman of Montville were chosen to the Class M team, and Putnam’s Abby St. Martin made the Class S team.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Stonington placed three athletes – Hanna Laskey, Katya Torruella and Lila Rich – on the CHSCA all-state gymnastics first team. They were joined on the first team by East Lyme's Kaitlyn Abbey, Woodstock Academy's Isabella Sorrentino, and Colchester's Tallulah Malz, who competes at Mercy.

    NFA had three athletes make the second team – Sarah Fedeli, Emma Field and Emma Gauthier – along with Norwich Tech's Avery Sulman, who competed for East Lyme, Killingly's Jadyn Williams, Stonington's Desiree Zaharie and Woodstock's Lindsey Gilies.

    College football

    • UConn announced an agreement to play Florida Atlantic during the 2024 and 2026 seasons. The Huskies will host the Owls on Sept. 21, 2024 at Rentschler Field, then visit FAU in Boca Raton on Nov. 21, 2026. UConn beat FAU in their only meeting, 61-14, in 2002 at Memorial Stadium.
