    Local roundup: Fitch edges Waterford in girls' tennis opener

    Groton — Fitch won two of the three doubles matches to pull out a 4-3 win over Waterford in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I girls' tennis match on Monday in the season opener for both teams.

    Fiona Kennedy and Fiza Shariff won singles matches for the Falcons, who also got wins from the teams of Michaela Ellis-Lily Cartier and Charlotte Carney-Ariana Timmerman. Sarah Hage and Autumn Brothers won singles matches for Waterford along with the team of Jen LeBlanc and Michele Liu at No. 1 doubles.

    In other matches:

    • Old Lyme won each match in two sets en route to a 7-0 win over Haddam-Killingworth in a Shoreline Conference match. Abigail Sicuranza, Callie Bass, Sam Tan and Livie Bass won their matches along with the doubles teams of Lauren Wallace-Alexis Fenton, Fiona Hufford-Izzy Reynolds and Sophia Ortoleva-Elaina Morosky for the Wildcats (2-0, 2-0).

    • NFA beat New London 7-0 in an ECC Division I match that opened the season for both teams. Anna Slopak, Paige Raposo, Katrina Hitchcock and Sarah Ericson all won their matches in straight sets and NFA won all three doubles matches by forfeit.

    • Ledyard swept singles play and beat Lyman Memorial 6-1 in the opener for both teams. Abigail DiRico, Bianca Planeta, Sarah Bailey and Hannah Jones won their matches in straight sets along with the doubles teams of Jill Rezendes-Tegan Opalenik and Haley Kulterman-Mackenzie Peluso. Abigail Hundley and Naomi Duhaime of Lyman won No. 3 doubles in three sets. 

    Boys' tennis

    • Old Lyme beat Haddam-Killingworth 5-0 in a Shoreline Conference match. George Danes, Charles Hinckley and Griffin McGlinchey had straight-set wins for the Wildcats (2-0, 2-0) along with the doubles teams of Regan Kaye-Will Danes and Mike Klier-Sam Koenigs.

    • NFA and New London played to a 2-2 tie in an ECC Division I match that opened the season for both teams. Jack Lacey and Aydin Chowdhury won their matches for NFA while Sebastien Jean Michel and Emmanuel Marin of New London won their matches.  

    Baseball

    • Old Saybrook scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, rallying for a 4-2 win over Old Lyme in a Shoreline Conference game. Old Lyme starting pitcher Riley Warecke struck out eight with four walks in five innings and was also 2-for-4. Jesper Silberberg doubled and scored a run for Old Lyme (0-2, 0-2). 

    Football

    • The Southern New London County Mutiny picked up their first win of the season, beating the Amity Independent Football Club 14-0 on Sunday in a Connecticut Independent High School Football game at Grasso Tech in Groton.

    Zekhi Burgis caught a pair of touchdown passes from Tyler Smith for the Mutiny (1-1), a 6-yard pass in the first quarter and a 19-yard connection in the third quarter. Steve Torres ran for a two-point conversion after the second touchdown. An interception by Kamil Johnson helped set up the first touchdown. The Mutiny, which lost its opener to Amity 10-8, has not allowed a point in seven quarters.
