Local roundup: Griswold ties Montville boys for first in ECC D-III soccer

A little pep talk and a tactical change did wonders for the Griswold boys’ soccer team on Monday.

The Wolverines rallied to tie Montville in the second half and Jacob Blanchard’s penalty kick in the first overtime completed a 2-1 win that denied the Indians a chance of winning the outright Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III title.

Both teams are 5-1-1 in the division with one match to play on Wednesday. The Wolverines visit Killingly and Montville visits to Lyman Memorial. Montville and Lyman played to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 9 while Griswold beat Killingly 3-0 on Oct. 4.

The Wolverines (11-2-1 overall) trailed 1-0 at halftime.

“They were playing really well in the first half,” Griswold head coach David Johnson said about his team. “(Montville scored) off a free kick and we were deflated. We just had to get their confidence up.

“We changed our formation to a 3-5-2 and essentially the rest of the game played on their end.”

Aiden Christie scored on an assist from Evan Merchant to tie the game in the 15th minute of the second half.

“Once they got it to overtime they were so excited,” Johnson said. “After the PK, they all pig-piled on each other.”

James Bruno had five saves for Griswold, which has outscored opponents 41-7 this season.

Aaron Gould, assisted by Colby Cowan, scored for Montville (9-4-1 overall), which beat the Wolverines 3-1 on Oct. 13, and goalie Adonis Santiago made nine saves.
