Local roundup: Stokes leads Mitchell to victory

Purchase, N.Y. — Alfonzo Stokes scored 27 points and had six rebounds as the Mitchell College men's basketball team beat SUNY Purchase 85-80 in a nonleague game on Tuesday night.

Waterford's Mikey Buscetto had 16 points and eight assists, New London's Jalen Benson had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists and Robert Zirlis had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Mariners (6-8). 

Men's hockey

• Goalie Sean Dynan made a career-high 42 saves as Connecticut College defeated Hamilton College 2-1 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. John Harrington gave the Camels (2-7, 1-5) a 1-0 lead in the first period before Kyle Shero made it 2-0 with a shorthanded goal in the second. Hamilton (5-3, 4-2) outshot Conn 43-24. 

H.S. swimming

• East Lyme remained unbeaten with a 102-77 victory over NFA in an Eastern Connecticut Conference meet. The Vikings (4-0, 3-0) picked up individual wins from Hawken Hammen in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.31), Ken Chen in the 200 IM (2:16.54), Ryan McLaughlin in diving (184.95 points), Mingwen Duan in teh 100 butterfly (1:04.20) and Eric Wang in the 500 free (5:00.33). Alex Ji won the 50 free (23.73) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.28) for NFA (1-2, 1-2) while Edmund Liang won the 100 backstroke (1:31.22) and Elijah Ramthun the 100 free (59.15). 

• Waterford dropped a 91-77 non-conference decision to Hand. The Lancers (0-3) picked up individual wins from Alex Startz in the 100-meter butterfly (1:07.86), Dylan Wininger-Sieve in the 100 backstroke (1:20.00) and Noah Wescott in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.94) and added a win in the 400 freestyle relay (4:34.93) with the team of Wininger-Sieve, Liam Pickett, Kevin Kilcomons and Startz.

H.S. wrestling

• NFA recorded four pins en route to a 51-30 win over Fitch in an ECC Division I match. Brock Nowakowski (106 pounds), Dugan Marsh (132), Connor Devega (138) and Zaire Wallace (170) had pins for NFA (7-3, 2-0) and teammate Rhys Surprenant (195) also won his match. Luca Ursini (113), Melakai Maddox (160), John Luethy (182), Cal Muese (220) and Ty Ambroise (285) had pins for Fitch (2-6, 0-2). 

Women's lacrosse

• Nate Davis is the new women's lacrosse coach at Mitchell. Davis replaces Devyn Doran, who left after two seasons to become the head coach at Framingham State. The Mariners were 0-12 in 2021 but return nine starters.

Davis was most recently the head coach at Concordia University in Chicago. He has also worked as an assistant at Southern Maine and with the men's lacrosse programs at the University of Dubuque and Division I Mount St. Mary's. He is a native of York Beach, Maine.

College honors

• Conn College's Maddie Ford was named NESCAC Performer of the Week in women's swimming and diving. Ford, a senior freestyle specialist, won two events against nationally-ranked Williams on Saturday, capturing the 100-yard freestyle in 52.49 seconds and the 200 free in 1:53.38. She also anchored the 200-medley relay team, which finished second in 1:49.73.

• Conn College's Tanya Mendoza was named NESCAC Performer of the Week in women's squash. The junior went unbeaten with a 3-0 victory against Chatham playing out of the No. 4 position before rallying from a 2-1 deficit to post a 3-2 victory against Georgetown from the No. 9 position.

• Mitchell's Dede Stevenson was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball. The junior guard, who also won the award for the week of Dec. 20, averaged 14.5 points in a game of games for the Mariners, including a 15-point, nine rebound, eight assist and two steal performance in a win over Eastern Nazarene.

• Trinity Angel and Nolan Molkenthin were named UConn Avery Point Athletes of the Week. Angel averaged 23 points and 18.5 in a pair of women's basketball games last week and was named to the all-tournament team at the North Country Tournament in New York. Molkenthin scored a career-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, in a men's basketball game against Bunker Hill CC.
