Local roundup: Waterford blanks No. 1 Bacon 5-0 in ECC baseball quarters

Waterford — Jack Lathrop pitched 5.1 shutout innings as eighth-seeded Waterford defeated No. 1 Bacon Academy 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference baseball tournament on Wednesday.

The Lancers (15-7) will face No. 5 Woodstock Academy, a 9-3 winner over No. 4 Killingly, in Thursday's semifinals at Fitch at 3:30 p.m.

The championship game will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Lathrop walked one and struck out five, working out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the second after Waterford had erupted for four runs in the top of the inning.

Anthony Jessuck's two-run double highlighted the inning for the Lancers, who handed Bacon ace Jack Novak (8-1) his first loss. Novak allowed five hits, walked one and struck out six.

Sean Salvador added two hits, two runs and an RBI for Waterford while Luke Pennella had a pair of hits for Bacon (17-4).

In other quarterfinal games:

• Daylan Griffin hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the fourth inning to lift third-seeded Lyman Memorial to a 6-4 win over No. 6 Stonington at Fitch. The Bulldogs (16-5) will play No. 2 Fitch, a 3-1 winnerover No. 7 East Lyme, in Thursday's semifinals at 1 p.m.

Griffin finished 2-for-3 and Nate Cone was 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored for Lyman, backing the pitching performance of Josh Person, who struck out nine over 6.1 innings before Alex Ortiz recorded the final two outs for the save. Stonington is 12-9. 

H.S. softball

• Third-seeded Old Lyme will play No. 5 North Branford in the Shoreline Conference tournament championship game on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Morgan School in Clinton. It will be a rematch of the 2021 title game won by North Branford.

The Wildcats had four players earn All-SLC honors. Emma Bayor (utility), Victoria Gage (infield) and Ava Roth (outfield) were named to the first team while Madison Hubbard (infield) was an honorable mention choice.

• Top-seeded Stonington and No. 2 St. Bernard will play for the ECC Division II softball tournament championship on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Griswold. Stonington (16-4) defeated No. 5 Montville 15-3 in the semifinals while the Saints (13-6) beat No. 3 Lyman Memorial 8-3.

Madi Allard had a big game for the Bears, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI, while Carli LoPresto was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, Cami Brown was 2-for-3 with two runs and Lola Worsdale had a pair of hits. Taryn Feragne had a triple and Mackenzie Payne an RBI single for Montville (7-14).

H.S. boys' golf

• Old Lyme split a Shoreline Conference tri-match at Black Hall, defeating Haddam-Killingworth 189-196 while losing to Hale-Ray 187-189. Pat Flanagan led the Wildcats (6-9, 6-9) with a 41 and Alex Chrysoulakis added a 43.

• Fitch improved to 10-6 with a 7-0 win over Griswold at River Ridge Golf Course. Nate McCormack earned medalist honors for the Falcons with a 40 and teammate Jack Kramer shot a 41. Griswold is 2-12.

H.S. girls' golf

• NFA beat Waterford 226-274 in an ECC match. Molly Plecan of NFA (12-1-1, 11-0) was the medalist with a 52 and teammate Keira Kotula shot a 54. Ally Puccio led Waterford (1-6, 1-6) with a 64.

H.S. boys' tennis

• Waterford beat St. Bernard/Wheeler 5-2 in a match which ended the regular season for both teams. Ian Balfour, Peter Colonis and Max Whitlock won their matches for the Lancers (4-10) along with the doubles teams of Noah Westkott-Andrew Bertrand and Quinn LeBelle-Louis Dhervilly. Evan Whitten won at No. 3 singles for the Saints (7-4) and Wyatt Hayes-Sam Cunningham won at No. 1 doubles.   

Women's basketball

• UConn will play Florida State in the 9th annual Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase on Dec. 11 at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Huskies are coming off a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament championship while the Seminoles were 17-14 and received an at-large bid. The showcase will also feature Iowa State and Villanova. Game times and broadcast details will be released at a later date.
