    Cardboard boat races

Greg Roberts, right, and Spencer Walker, of Enfield High School paddle their cardboard boats with giant spoons as they compete in the first high school heat of the University of Connecticut Early College Experience (ECE) program annual cardboard boat races on the Groton campus waterfront Thursday, September 22, 2016. The races, with boats from 20 teams from UConn and high schools around the state, are the culmination of a day of outreach to about 300 ECE students visiting the Avery Point campus. The races were opened to teams from ECE physics programs for the first time more than doubling the number of participating high schools. Teams from Enfield High School won both heats of the high school division and competed with a UConn boat for the overall championship. Colby Unterstein, 17, of Enfield paddled to the championship after his competition in the final swamped shortly after the start of the race. (Sean D. Elliot/The Day)
