Haitian Health Foundation seeks donations for hurricane relief

Norwich — The locally-based Haitian Health Foundation is seeking donations to help residents of Jérémie, Haiti, affected by Hurricane Matthew on Oct. 3.

While the community suffered extensive damage from the hurricane, the Haitian Health Foundation’s facilities there are among just a few structures that weathered the storm and are able to provide services, the nonprofit group said in a news release Saturday.

Early estimates are that more than 80 percent of buildings in Jérémie were damaged, and crops and livestock were wiped out, the foundation said. Damage to roads and bridges have made access to the area difficult.

The foundation’s main clinic there has power from diesel generators and solar panels, and is providing meals and medical services.

Due to the complexity of getting supplies to the area and the immediate needs, the foundation is requesting monetary donations. Additional repairs are required to solar panels and communication equipment. Traditional cargo shipments of food and supplies are slow to arrive and medical supplies and services are urgently needed help impacted residents.

Already 14 cases of cholera have been confirmed, and more cases are expected to arise due to unsanitary water. The foundation said it is working with Americares, Caris Foundation and other relief agencies to help provide an effective coordinated response.
