A group of independent power producers on Thursday unveiled a digital campaign against a bill pending in the state Legislature that would allow the Millstone Power Station to bid for long-term energy contracts in the same markets as large renewable power producers.

Language for the bill is being crafted, said Sen. Paul Formica, R-East Lyme, co-sponsor of the placeholder bill filed at the beginning of the session. A public hearing on the full version of the bill is expected in the Energy and Technology Committee later this month, he said.

Formica stressed that the final bill would not offer a state subsidy to the nuclear power plant.

“It is in no way, shape or form a subsidy,” Formica said. “It is an opportunity to bid. If the bid is accepted by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, it would have to be in the best interests of the ratepayers.”

The website launched by Calpine Corp., Dynegy, NRG Energy and the Electric Power Supply Association, www.stopthemillstonepayout.com/, includes “information about the potential payout, relevant news stories, press releases and an integrated function to take action and contact one’s state representative,” according to a news release from the group.

Formica called the effort a “misinformation or a scare tactic” to prevent the legislature from approving the bill he said is needed to help ensure Millstone remains viable as a bridge to a future energy supplies coming primarily from renewables. The group, he said, would benefit if Millstone were to close, but ratepayers would not.

“We think this proposal will reduce rates and give us a period of stability moving forward,” he said.
