Committee notifies residents of options to fight gypsy moth infestation

Ledyard — The town's Gypsy Moth Committee is notifying residents that there are a number of resources available to fight infestations on their property.

While the committee was not able to secure a permit this year for aerial spraying, several area tree experts quoted prices ranging from $300 to $400 an acre for ground spraying. More information is available at the town's website,, which hosts a page with gypsy moth information that includes home remedies and contact information for licensed arborists.

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station also has released a factsheet about the lifecycle of the gypsy moth and what homeowners can do to address infestations. The station indicated that the best time to do ground spraying is between mid-May and mid-June, while the moths are still caterpillars.

The Gypsy Moth Ad Hoc Committee also is available to answer questions directly, if anyone has encountered a gypsy moth problem, at A Parks and Recreation brochure also will include more information.
