Casinos' slots revenue declined in July
Both Connecticut casinos reported year-over-year decreases in July slot-machine revenue Wednesday.
Mohegan Sun’s slots report showed it “won,” or kept, $55 million after paying out prizes, a 1.5 percent decline over the $55.9 million it kept in July 2017. Foxwoods Resort Casino kept $42.8 million, down 4.9 percent over the $45 million it kept during the same month a year ago.
Mohegan Sun’s “handle,” the total amount wagered at its machines, amounted to $664.1 million, a decline of less than half a percentage point. Foxwoods' handle of $534.4 million was down 6.7 percent.
July 2017 was a more favorable month for the casinos’ reporting purposes, with five Saturdays and five Sundays. July 2018 had five Sundays but only four Saturdays.
The casinos send 25 percent of their slots win to the state. In July, Mohegan Sun’s contribution was $13.8 million; Foxwoods’ was $10.9 million.
In the 2018 fiscal year that ended June 30, the casinos combined to pay the state $272.2 million, up from $270.7 million in fiscal year 2017. The combined payments peaked more than a decade ago, in fiscal 2007, when they totaled $430.5 million.
August’s slots revenues will be the first to reflect the impact of MGM Springfield, a nearly $1 billion resort casino opening a week from Friday in Massachusetts.
