Macy's in Crystal Mall closing, company says

Waterford — Macy’s at Crystal Mall is closing.

Macy’s, which announced a year ago it would close about 125 stores across the country, announced this week it will close two of its stores in Connecticut, the ones here and in the Brass Mill Center in Waterbury.

“As previously announced, Macy’s Inc. is committed to rightsizing our store fleet by concentrating our existing retail locations in desirable and well-trafficked A and B malls,” a Macy’s spokeswoman, Carolyn Ng Cohen, wrote in an email. “To that end, we announced several store closures that align to the guidance we provided in February 2020.”

According to Macy’s, the news previously had been shared with employees. Regular, nonseasonal employees who cannot be placed at another, nearby Macy’s store will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources, the company said.

A clearance sale will begin this month and run for approximately 8 to 12 weeks.

“The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s Crystal Mall is honored to have served our customers and the community over the past 36 years,” Cohen wrote.

Macy’s remaining locations in Connecticut include Danbury, Farmington, Manchester, Milford, Stamford and Trumbull, according to the company’s website.
