New London — Thirty members of the incoming Class of 2023 at the Coast Guard Academy, and four cadets who are overseeing their summer training, are recovering from a bacterial infection.

Academy spokesman Dave Milne said there have been no new reports of infection in the past 48 hours. Those affected were instructed to recover in their rooms and not partake in Swab Summer activities. As of 2 p.m. Thursday, they were expected to return to full duty by the end of the day. The academy notified the parents association of the outbreak.

Swab Summer is the seven-week indoctrination to life at the academy that all new cadets, called swabs, go through.
