Kirk Edwards plays album release show Sunday in Madry Temple
On Sunday in New London's Madry Temple Church, jazz saxophonist Kirk Edwards plays a release party concert in support of his recent "The AKA Project" album. The recording utilizes the contrafact approach to composition, wherein Edwards fitted existing song structures from the jazz repertoire with all new melodies.
Joining Edwards on the recording sessions are in-demand New York City musicians Donald Vega (piano, album production), Dave Baron (bass) and Pete Van Nostrand (drums) and for the release party — and the same lineup will be on hand for Sunday's show.
To hear this band's approach to material by the likes of Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Kurt Weill and Horace Silver — in with the lovely acoustics, sightlines and welcoming vibes of Madry Temple, no less — is a splendid opportunity.
Kirk Edwards, "The AKA Project" release party, 3 p.m. Sunday, Madry Temple, 25 Manwaring St., New London; $25 concert admission, CDs available after the show for $15; kedwards234@comcast.net.
