It took a while for it to come to fruition (seven years of planning and two years of construction), but The United Theatre was worth the wait.

The venue was renovated with an eye for detail, and it’s a welcoming space.

And then, of course, there are the multitudinous offerings. The name says “Theatre,” but it’s really more of a wide-ranging arts center.

The United screens major movie releases all the time, and it brings in concerts featuring area and national acts. Coming up are live shows by Thor Jensen on July 15, Hiss Golden Messenger on Sept. 4 and Billy Bragg on Oct. 7. In addition, the Kingston Chamber Music Festival offers the Dover Quartet at the United on July 26.

There is a July 26 date scheduled for the "Black Voices Film Series."

Lectures and exhibitions are part of the mix as well.

Oh, and adjoining The United is The Café, which has a stylishly cool interior and serves gloriously delicious food.
