Fish Tales: 'Searching for the Heidi Marie' podcast
When the Stonington-based lobster boat Heidi Marie went missing in November 1989, Day Staff Writer Joe Wojtas, who covers the town's fishing fleet to this day, flew with the U.S. Coast Guard on a search and rescue mission. He sat down with us recently to tell the story of the search and describe a memorable interview he conducted 10 years later with the mother of one of the five fishermen lost at sea.
Sea musicians Rick Spencer and Dawn Indermuehle joined us in the studio to perform "Heidi Marie," a haunting song about the missing boat and the danger faced by those "who make their living harvesting the sea."
This podcast, produced by Assistant Managing Editor Carlos Virgen, is dedicated to the lost crew of the Heidi Marie — Arthur Banks, Kenneth R. Gould, Mark Middletown, Raymond V. Morris and Michael N. Hare — and their families.
