North Stonington — A fire that started in a Jeep spread to a nearby shed before firefighters extinguished it about 1:15 p.m. Friday.

Both were located about 150 feet behind the house at 686 Pendleton Hill Road.

Members of the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company had to drag a hose by hand 300 feet to the fire because they couldn't get access to the site with their engine, said Fire Chief Charles Steinhart V.

Wind caused the fire to spread to a nearby 20-by-20-foot shed.

"They actually almost saw it jump to the building," Fire Marshal George Brennan said.

NSVFC had 14 firefighters on the scene, and six firefighters from the Ashaway Volunteer Fire Association, including their tanker and engine.

Brennan said it will be "very difficult" to determine the cause of the fire, as the vehicle had been mostly burnt.

He said the owner had been using the vehicle shortly before the fire for work, and the fire likely originated in the engine.

The fire meant the company was unable to respond to the call for mutual aid for a structure fire in Ledyard, though immediatly afterward the company sent their Utility Task Vehicle.
