UPDATED: Rhode Island man killed in North Stonington head-on crash
North Stonington — A Rhode Island man was killed and another person injured in a head-on crash Monday on Pendleton Hill Road.
The crash involving a car and minivan occurred about 3:30 p.m. just south of Interstate 95.
State police said 39-year-old Ryan P. Poland of North Providence, R.I., was traveling north on Pendleton Hill Road (Route 49) when his Honda Civic collided with a southbound minivan driven by James E. Pont, 59, of Ashaway, R.I.
Firefighers needed to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the two men, who were trapped in their vehicles.
Poland was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Pont was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
