Red Cross helping New London resident after fire

New London — One adult resident was displaced Tuesday by a fire that actually occurred on Saturday, city fire officials say.

The situation highlights "how important it is to call the fire department, even if you think you put it out yourself, because there could be hidden fire somewhere," city Fire Marshal Vernon Skau said by phone Tuesday night.

In this case, the resident did put out the kitchen fire and no one was hurt, but there was "considerable damage" in the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the unit, Skau said. He and the city fire department said they were notified Tuesday that there had been a fire at 6 Redden Ave., Apt. 3, and an inspection was conducted.

The American Red Cross is helping the displaced resident, according to a news release. The agency provided the person with "a recovery envelope" with information, including how to clean up, notify important contacts and deal with damaged items, the news release stated. The Red Cross also provided comfort kits with "personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant; shaving supplies and other items a resident might need when suddenly displaced from their home by a fire."

The property owner is fixing the damage, Skau said.
