Fire extinguished at waste management facility in New London

New London — Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at the Connecticut Waste Processing Materials LLC, or CWPM, transfer station at 45 Fourth St. early Wednesday morning.

New London Fire Battalion Chief Jeffrey M. Rheaume described the blaze, which was first reported at 3 a.m., as a “deep-seated fire” at the 26,000-square-foot warehouse that serves as a waste management and recycling facility. The structure itself was not impacted by the fire, only the material in it. Firefighters were at the scene for more than four hours.

Workers from CWPM responded to the scene and used the facility’s heavy machinery to access the fire and remove debris from the area while firefighters doused the area with water, Rheaume said in a statement.

New London firefighters were joined by personnel from the Waterford Fire Department, Submarine Base Fire Department, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton Ambulance, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital Paramedics and Veolia Water.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
