Part of roof collapses in Norwich apartment fire

Norwich — The roof of an apartment building partially collapsed in a structure fire Sunday morning.

No residents were injured, according to a news release. One firefighter suffered a minor hand injury and was treated on scene.

Battalion Chief Michael Dziavit of the Norwich Fire Department said in the news release that the fire at 51 14th St. was reported at 5:11 a.m. Crews arrived four minutes later to a fire on the building’s exterior that extended into the attic and threatened a nearby structure.

Crews searched the building’s second floor for a reported missing person who was later found outside, according to the release. Firefighters rescued a number of cats and a bird from the building before advancing fire conditions and the partial roof collapse turned the fight to the defensive.

Fifty-three personnel from seven responding departments — including Mohegan Tribal, New London Fire Department’s Firefighter Assist and Search Team and all Norwich Volunteer Departments — brought the fire under control by 7:06 a.m., the release said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Red Cross is providing aid to 12 adults and nine children.
