Fire in East Lyme displaces two people

East Lyme - A fire in a residential area on Webster Road on Friday night displaced two adults.

The Red Cross is assisting the two adults, which they referred to as “a family,” according to a news release issued Saturday. Flanders Fire Department confirmed that there was a fire, but did not release any other details, including whether anyone was injured or the extent of damage to the building. Niantic Fire Department did not answer a request for comment.

“On Friday 12, August Flanders and Niantic Fire Departments operated at a property on Webster Road,” Flanders Fire Department wrote in a post on its Facebook page Saturday morning. “Following an initial report of an … alarm activation … smoke … was found in the attic, which was quickly dealt with. Units were clear of the scene after approximately two hours.”

Aside from finding the displaced people a place to stay, the Red Cross provided them with “information helpful to families recovering from a fire” and gave them “comfort kits” containing toiletries and personal care items.

“Those affected will connect with Red Cross case workers in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan,” The Red Cross added in its news release.

    This is a developing story.
