New London home badly damaged by fire

New London ―At least one person was displaced by a fire on Monday that damaged an Ocean Avenue home.

The fire at 611 Ocean Ave., Unit D2, was reported by a 911 caller at 11:03 a.m. The townhouse is part of the Ocean Park Condominiums complex.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke coming from the first-floor door of the two-story home, New London Fire Chief Tom Curcio said.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire without any major damage to adjoining buildings. The home, however, sustained heavy fire damage on the first floor and smoke and heat damage on the second floor.

Curcio said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office. It appears the fire may have started in the laundry room where a dryer was left running.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the homeowner with any emergency needs.
