Investigation, cleanup continues at site of Mystic fire

Mystic ― The Mystic fire marshal said it is likely to take several weeks before he is able to make a determination on the cause of a Nov. 27 fire that destroyed a warehouse at Seaport Marine and an adjacent home.

Mystic Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Anthony Manfredi Jr. said his office, with assistance from the state fire marshal’s office, is conducting interviews and reviewing video footage related to the blaze. More work needs to be done picking through the debris left by the fire at 2 Washington St., Manfredi said.

Meanwhile, contractors hired by the state Department of Energy and Environmental this week used a large vacuum on adjacent properties, sucking up debris spread by the fire that could contain asbestos

Paul Copleman, a DEEP spokesman, said asbestos was detected in the vicinity of the fire. Neighbors were notified that contractors in protective suits would need access to their properties to manually remove the debris. The work started two blocks north of the fire. A portion of the Mystic River Park where a playground is located remained closed to the public on Friday as a safety precaution, Manfredi said.

Contractors also removed any oil that remained in fuel tanks on the site of the fire, Copleman said.
