Fire demolishes vacant building at Norwich State Hospital
Norwich ― A fire destroyed a vacant former doctor’s residence at the Norwich State Hospital on Sunday night.
Laurel Hill Volunteer Fire Company Fire Chief Aaron Westervelt said the fire department received a call from Mohegan Sun, where the fire could be seen on surveillance cameras.
When firefighters arrived on the property around 8 p.m., flames were 20 feet in the air and the roof of the two-story building was collapsing, Westervelt said. The fire was in a house formerly occupied by a doctor.
The fire was contained to the one structure and there were no injuries, Westervelt said.
Laurel Hill Volunteer Fire Company responded, along with the Norwich and Preston Fire Departments, he said.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
