Tests show no asbestos at New London fire station

New London ― The New London Fire Department on Thursday temporarily moved firefighters and fire equipment out of its Broad Street station during asbestos testing.

Test results on samples of material from the station showed no asbestos was present and firefighters were cleared to return on Friday, New London’s Chief Administrative Officer Steve Fields said.

Fire Chief Thomas Curcio said renovations of a bathroom at the 240 Broad St. building, known as North Station, prompted concerns about the presence of asbestos. Air quality tests performed Thursday night determined it was safe for personnel to occupy the station.

But the city, out of an abundance of caution, decided to keep firefighters out of the station until the results of test samples were known.
