New London police hires new officer, bringing total to 65

New London ―The New London Police Department on Friday swore in new police officer candidate Nicholas de la Cruz.

A Groton native, Cruz previously worked for six years at the Groton Town Police Department and filed a complaint last year with the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities over alleged discrimination because of his race and a neck injury he suffered on the job. De la Cruz is of Filipino and Puerto Rican descent. The status of that complaint was not immediately available Tuesday.

De la Cruz was working at Electric Boat in Groton prior to his hire in New London. He began his 10 to 12 weeks of training in New London on Monday.

De la Cruz’s hire brings the New London Police Department to 65 sworn police officers, Captain Matthew Galante said. The department continues to accept applications for employment on PoliceApp.com.
