Ledyard police charge Norwich woman with leaving 2-year-old child in car

Ledyard ― Town police charged a 31-year-old Norwich woman with leaving her sleeping 2-year-old child strapped into a car seat for more than 30 minutes while she took another daughter in to a doctor’s appointment.

Danielle Gomez, of 38 McKinley Ave., Apt. B, Norwich, was charged Thursday with risk of injury to a minor and leaving a child under the age of 12 unsupervised.

On Sept. 13, shortly after 10 a.m., police were called to Gales Ferry Pediatrics at 1527 Route 12 for a report of an unresponsive child locked in a running car.

Police said they arrived to find several nurses crowded around the car, banging on the windows in an effort to wake up the child, who was strapped into a car seat. Police began to look for the child’s mother, later identified as Gomez, but were unable to do so. They started smashing the front windows of the car to get inside.

Gomez then walked out of the pediatrics building and unlocked the vehicle, police said, after which they determined the 2-year-old was sleeping.

Gomez was arrested on a warrant and released on a promise to appear Sept. 29 in New London Superior Court, police said.
