Police make arrest after wrong-way collision on I-95 in Groton early Saturday
Groton — State police said a man is facing charges after a wrong-way collision early Saturday morning on Interstate 95.
Police said in a news release that they received calls at about 1:04 a.m. Saturday that a car was driving southbound on I-95 north in the area of Exit 90 in Stonington. Police then were told that the Toyota Corolla had been involved in a head-on collision near Exit 89 in Groton.
Police responding to the scene said the driver of the Toyota Corolla agreed to field sobriety tests, which “were not performed to standard.” Police said the driver had a suspended out-of-state driver’s license, that the license plate was a misuse, and the car was “not properly registered or insured.”
Raheem Carter, 25, of Providence, the driver of the Toyota Corolla, was charged with driving an unregistered motor vehicle, improper use of license plate, driving without minimum insurance, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, and driving without a license.
According to the accident report, a Hyundai Sonata was driving early Saturday in the right lane on I-95 near Exit 89 as a Hyundai Kona SEL drove in the left lane ahead of the Sonata.
The Toyota Corolla driving the wrong way caused a head-on collision with the Hyundai Kona SEL, which then deflected off the Toyota Corolla and sideswiped the Hyundai Sonata, according to the report.
The driver of the Hyundai Kona SEL was transported by Groton Ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for a suspected minor injury, according to the report.
Police said Carter was released on a $2,500 cash/surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment in New London Superior Court on Aug. 12.
