DUI crash forces closure of Route 156 in East Lyme

East Lyme – Route 156, between Roxbury Road and Giants Neck Road, remained closed Friday morning due to a crash on Thursday that downed a utility pole and led to the arrest of the driver.

The one-car crash into a utility pole in the area of 220 W. Main St., which resulted in wires in the roadway, happened at 9:40 p.m. Acting East Lyme Police Chief Michael Macek said. Eversource crews were at the scene Friday morning working to restore electricity to about eight customers without power.

Police arrested a 30-year-old East Lyme man as a result of the crash. Sean F. Lamourine of 11 Fairhaven Road is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading responsibility and making an improper turn.

Police said Lamourine attempted to flee the scene of the crash on foot but was found and taken into custody.

A detour remains in place taking vehicles off Route 156 to North Bride Brook Road and Chadwick Place. Macek said police have alerted employees at York Correctional Institution, located near the scene of the crash, about possible delays caused by the utility work.
