Road rage incident involving gun leads to police pursuit through multiple towns
Griswold ― State police arrested a New Britain man on Thursday who they say flashed a gun at another driver on Interstate 395 and then led them on a chase through multiple towns in a stolen BMW.
At 4:34 p.m. on Thursday, police said state police at Troop E in Montville fielded a 911 call from a person who reported that the driver of a white BMW X5 SUV had displayed a gun during a road rage incident on the northbound side of I-395 northbound, near Exit 21 in Griswold.
State troopers spotted the BMW near Exit 24 and pursued the vehicle into Plainfield. Police said the driver of the BMW, later identified as 19-year-old Jadin Coakley, nearly struck a trooper from Troop D in Danielson head-on along Route 14 in Canterbury. The pursuit continued through Plainfield, Canterbury, Scotland, Windham and ended in Columbia.
In Columbia, police said Coakley and his passenger got out of the SUV and fled. A state police K-9 team helped find Coakley in an empty school bus and was taken into custody. Police said his passenger was identified as a juvenile.
Police said the BMW was stolen out in Ridgefield and they found a firearm at the scene and cocaine in the car.
Coakley was charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, interfering with police, first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree threatening, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, engaging an officer in pursuit and reckless driving.
Coakley was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Norwich Superior Court.
