Elderly man dead after East Lyme rollover crash
East Lyme ― An 80-year-old driver died Friday afternoon after his car rolled over on Chesterfield Road, police said.
At approximately 12:35 p.m., police were dispatched to the area of Chesterfield Road, also known as Route 161, near the intersection of Drabik Road, for a one-car crash.
The driver was removed from the vehicle and life-saving measures were initiated. The man was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, where he was pronounced dead.
Acting police Chief Michael Macek said the victim’s identity is being withheld until police can notify his next of kin. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The accident scene was complicated by a second crash that occurred at 3:09 p.m. when a vehicle traveling north on Chesterfield Road, about 500 feet south of the fatal crash, veered off the road and struck a tree. The driver was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
That crash, which led to the tree falling on Chesterfield Road near the detour for the first crash, required the state Department of Transportation to remove the debris before the section of road could be reopened.
