Stonington police: Officers subdue man who attacked them with knives
Stonington ― Police arrested a Pawcatuck man early Friday morning after they say he charged two officers swinging one of the two large knives he was holding.
“The two officers did an outstanding job taking control of a large male subject who attacked them while holding knives in both hands,” said Deputy Chief Todd Olson. “This could have turned out a lot worse.”
Police charged William W. Frick, 32, of 24 Elaine St., with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, assault on a police officer, third-degree assault on an elderly victim, disorderly conduct, payment card theft, second-degree threatening and carrying a dangerous weapon. He was held overnight on a $500,000 bond and was arraigned in New London Superior Court later Friday, where his bond was set at $100,000.
Olson said Officers Peter Sieczkiewicz and Anthony Brito were called to Frick’s home by his parents, who were reporting a domestic disturbance. Police said Frick had assaulted his father and threatened to kill him.
Olson said as the two officers entered the home, Frick lunged at one of the officers, narrowly missing him with one of the knives. The officers then tackled Frick and took him to the ground. It was then they found he had a larger knife in his other hand.
One of the officers and Frick’s father sustained minor injuries but did not need to go to the hospital.
Olson said Frick was verbally abusive to medical personnel who took him to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. He was brought back to the Stonington police department, where he was held until his arraignment.
