Mercedes driver charged with driving 115 mph through I-95 construction zone

East Lyme ― An Old Lyme man was charged with reckless driving Monday after state police say he was speeding at up to 117 miles per hour on Interstate 95, including driving more than 115 miles per hour through a construction zone.

The posted speed limit in the construction zone is 50 miles per hour.

Police said in a news release that at 12:37 a.m. Monday, a state trooper in the right lane on I-95 northbound near Exit 73 saw a black Mercedes-Benz SUV driving at a high speed in the left lane.

The driver was later identified as Joseph Jankovich, 46, of Old Lyme.

The state trooper merged into the left lane behind Jankovich and clocked the car’s speed at 105 miles per hour in a 65 mile-per-hour zone, police said.

The Mercedes-Benz then entered into a construction zone, where there is a 50 miles-per-hour limit and speed indicator signs, and was observed driving at about 115, according to the report.

With both shoulders closed in the construction zone, the trooper waited until both cars reached a safer stopping place, police said.

Immediately before the trooper activated the cruiser’s lights and sirens, the Mercedes-Benz was traveling at about 117 miles per hour, police said.

When the trooper signaled the Mercedes-Benz to pull over, Jankovich slowed down and stopped in the right shoulder of the Exit 75 off-ramp.

Police said they took Jankovich into custody and transported him to the Troop E state police barracks in Montville.

He was released on a $1,500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 16 in New London Superior Court.

Jankovich was already free on $1,500 in bonds after two previous arrests this summer. On May 8 he was arrested by East Lyme police and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Then on July 17 state police at Troop F in Colchester charged him with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Those cases are pending in court.

Jankovich’s arrest came about an hour after the state police ended their official Labor Day enforcement period, which began at midnight Friday and ended Monday night at 11:59 p.m.

During that time, state police issued 605 speeding tickets and charged 343 people with hazardous moving violations. In addition, they responded to 334 accidents, with 26 injuries and one death, which occurred in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 91 in Windsor.
