    UPDATED: New London man with long record faces drugs and weapons charges

    New London ― Police arrested a suspected drug dealer on Monday who they say ran from officers and was later found in possession of a loaded 9 mm handgun with a high capacity magazine and laser sights.

    Police said officers had responded to the area of 280 Broad St. at 5:02 p.m. for reports of narcotics activity. Police said when they approached a vehicle suspected of being involved, Cevon Riley, 25, of 730 State Pier Road, got out and ran.

    With the assistance of K9 Reya, police said Riley was found hiding in a wooded area. Along with the gun, police said Riley was found in possession of 1.3 ounces of crack cocaine.

    Riley, who has multiple pending criminal cases and was sentenced to two years in prison for his role in a 2016 shooting in Groton. He was held on a $200,000 bond after being arraigned Tuesday in New London Superior Court. His next court date is Oct. 1.

    He was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a high capacity magazine, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of narcotics, interfering with police, first-degree criminal trespass and breach of peace.

    Additionally, police said Riley had warrants for failure to appear in court on five pending criminal cases. Those cases involve a variety of charges that include sale of narcotics and violation of probation.
