Three Groton Town Police officers injured while making domestic violence arrest
Groton ― Town Police said three officers were injured Sunday night while making a domestic violence-related arrest.
Police said that at 7:42 p.m. Sunday, they received several calls from a North Road home. The caller, identified later as 41-year-old Micah Johnson, “repeatedly disconnected his calls prematurely and yelling could be heard in the background of the calls.”
Police received more reports that Johnson was acting erratically, had assaulted a female, and reportedly had a knife.
According to police, when officers arrived at 826 North Road, they found Johnson at the end of the driveway. Police said Johnson was unarmed, but he ran into traffic to try to stop cars.
They said Johnson appeared intoxicated, was highly agitated and was making nonsensical statements.
Police said they tried to deescalate the situation and talked to Johnson, while other officers talked to the involved parties and witnesses. When police told Johnson he was under arrest, they said “he began to tense up, once again became agitated and started to walk away from officers toward his house.”
Police said Johnson did not comply with an officer’s directive who was repeatedly trying to calm him down. When police tried to take Johnson into custody, he refused to follow their commands.
Police said the officers eventually took Johnson to the ground “and a struggle with officers ensued.”
Police said Johnson was placed into handcuffs after a “prolonged physical struggle.”
Police said that during the struggle, three officers were injured.
Police said one officer was treated at Pequot Health Center’s Emergency Room and then released, but remains out of work due to the injuries.
A second officer received significant abrasions to both his knees, while the third received abrasions to his head, face, both knees and hands.
Johnson was charged with disorderly conduct, interfering with an officer, and three counts of assault on a police officer. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is next scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Nov. 4.
Police are investigating and ask anyone with information about the incident to contact the department at (860) 441-6712.
