Man gets one year for scamming elderly Preston couple

A 40-year-old Bronx, N.Y. man will spend one year in prison for scamming an elderly Preston couple out of $12,500.

Jose Perezclark, during an appearance in New London Superior Court, pleaded guilty to second-degree larceny as part of a plea agreement. He was sentenced by Judge John Newson to one year in prison followed by three years of probation.

On Jan. 8, 2022, police said, the Preston couple received a phone call from someone pretending to be from Bridgeport Superior Court requesting $12,500 because the couple’s daughter was in legal trouble. The couple handed over the cash to a courier sent to their home.

The couple received a second phone call from a person posing as a defense attorney who requested another $20,000. The couple realized they had been scammed when their daughter showed up at home.

State police from Troop E in Montville sent a dummy package with the second courier, an innocent Uber driver, and followed the vehicle to Bridgeport, where they arrested Perezclark and recovered the $12,500.
