One student injured as school bus crashes into Volvo in Groton
Groton ― One student was injured after a school bus transporting 34 students to the Mystic River Magnet School crashed Thursday morning into the back of a Volvo sedan, then a utility pole and a large boulder, police said.
The student was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Groton Town police said. The Volvo driver was not taken to the hospital.
Police cited the bus driver, Bryan Sanchez-Datiz, with failing to drive a reasonable distance apart from another vehicle. The school bus is owned by Student Transportation of America, a company that provides bus service for the schools.
Police said Sanchez-Datiz was traveling east on New London Road approaching the intersection of Flanders Road, when it struck the Volvo ― which was waiting to make a left turn onto Flanders Road ― from behind. The bus then traveled right and off the south side of New London Road, where it hit the pole and the rock, damaging the bus.
Along with emergency personnel, an administrator from the school, which is located on Fishtown Road in Mystic, arrived to assist the students and contact their parents to let them know about the accident, police said. The school bus was towed and another bus arrived to bring the students to school.
New London Road in the area of the intersection of Flanders Road was closed for about two hours while the accident was investigated, police said.
Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash or has other information that would assist in the investigation to call them at 860-441-6712.
