Two killed in I-95 crash in Groton
Groton ― State police say two people were killed late Friday night when their pickup truck went off Interstate 95 at exit 87, struck a guardrail and tree and then caught fire.
Police said the driver and passenger, who were not immediately identified, died at the scene of the 9:20 p.m. crash in the northbound lanes as the driver was using the exit.
The Dodge pickup is registered to a New London man.
Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Fire Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said firefighters responded within five minutes to the report of a vehicle fire with possible entrapment. The blaze was heavily involved when crews got there, according to Rheaume.
Groton Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics also responded, Rheaume said.
