Lisbon ― A local man suffered apparent serious injuries when his car went off the left side of the road on Route 169 and slammed into the historic 1810 John Bishop House Museum on Tuesday evening, state police said.

State police said the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Terry W. Powell, 67, of 423 North Burnham Highway, was traveling northbound just south of the Newent Road intersection at 6:56 p.m. Tuesday, when he crossed the southbound lane, went off the road onto the lawn south of the Bishop House, continued past a flower garden and struck the foundation and lower portion of the house.

Powell was taken by ambulance to the Backus Hospital in Norwich. His condition was not available Wednesday.

Police said the museum was unoccupied at the time, and no other injuries were reported.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Trooper Timothy Wengloski at (860) 848-6500, ext. 5.

The town owns the Bishop House and leases it to the Lisbon Historical Society as a museum and education center. The house is open for tours at certain times during the summer.

First Selectman Thomas Sparkman said Wednesday the crash left a hole in the foundation and side of the house. The holes have been patched with plywood. Sparkman is awaiting an insurance assessment of the damage and repair costs.

“We’re in a holding pattern right now,” Sparkman said.
