Man who struck construction worker on I-95 in Stonington faces new charges

Stonington ― State police on Wednesday lodged new charges against a Danbury man charged with hitting a construction worker on Interstate 95 while driving drunk.

Julio L. Macancela, 46, turned himself in to state police in Montville after learning of the warrant for his arrest in connection with the Sept. 10 incident in the area of exits 91 and 92.

Macancela was charged with endangering a highway worker, reckless driving and evading responsibility. Arraigned in New London Superior Court on Wednesday, Macancela is free on a $100,000 bond.

Police said Macancela was driving a pickup truck in the highway’s left lane, which had been shut down for the construction project, when he struck a construction worker from behind. The worker, a contractor of for the state Department of Transportation, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Westerly Hospital for treatment.

After leaving the scene, police said Macancela was stopped and arrested by Rhode Island State Police, who charged him with with driving under the influence ― second offense. Records show Macancela is on probation for a previous drunken driving arrest in Connecticut.
