Woman charged with attempted murder in Norwich

Norwich ― Police arrested a 45-year-old Norwich woman Friday on charges she slashed and stabbed a woman multiple times during a dispute at a Briar Lane home.

Mary Beth Kostek of 25 Briar Lane in Norwich is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault and cruelty to persons in connection with an assault that occurred on Thursday morning.

At 11:25 a.m. on Thursday, police responded to a 911 call from Kostek’s home from a woman who identified herself as Mary Beth and claimed she was attacked by her friend with a wine glass and blood was spurting from her finger, the arrest warrant affidavit states.

Police arrived to find a large amount of blood on the walls and floor in the kitchen and living room and a woman on the living room couch suffering from “severe facial lacerations appearing to be caused by some type of an edged weapon,” the affidavit states.

Police said the victim told police that Kostek “just went crazy” and had attacked her with a folding buck knife and a piece of broken wine glass after accusing her of stealing.

Kostek told the victim, “You’re going to die. I’m going to kill you,” according to the police report.

Police said the victim suffered six lacerations to the chest, 13 lacerations to the face and ears and 15 lacerations to her back and arm. Both women were taken to Backus Hospital for treatment while police secured a search and seizure warrant for the apartment.

Police said they found Kostek unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom with minor lacerations to both hands. There was also what appeared to be a pile of “ripped human hair on the bed and floor along with additional blood,” police said. It’s unclear from the arrest warrant affidavit where the hair came from.

Kostek was later identified as the one who called 911, police said. Kostek, in an interview with police, said she cut her finger after a wine glass broke when she and the victim were toasting two glasses of espresso martinis. She claimed the dispute started after she spoke to the victim about going to rehabilitation/detox.

Kostek was held on a $1.5 million court set bond and scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Norwich Superior Court. Police said the victim in the case remains hospitalized but is stable.

Court records show Kostek has two pending cases. In March, Kostek was charged by state police with disorderly conduct and second-degree threatening. On April 10, 2023, Montville police charged Kostek with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Kostek was convicted of drunken driving in 2019, public records show.
