NFA football game evacuated due to social media threat
Norwich ― Police said people were evacuated Friday night from the Norwich Free Academy football game, after a threat was made on social media.
According to a news release, the FBI National Threat Operations Section Exigent Threat Research and Analysis Crisis Team called Norwich police at 8:50 p.m. Friday, as the game was entering the final two minutes of play, about a threat. The FBI agent said there was a SnapChat post of a picture from the football game stands with an active threat to commit a shooting.
Police said they began evacuating students and spectators from the game and searched open buildings at NFA to make sure there was no threat. Police estimate several hundred spectators were attending the game, as well as the student athletes, band members, and cheerleaders.
With help from the FBI information and Norwich Police Department School Resource Officers, police identified and found the suspect, who is a juvenile at a Norwich Public School, according to the release.
Police are not releasing the suspect’s identity.
Police said they made an arrest. Police said the student is being kept out of school “pending a review by the Board of Education.”
“The Norwich Police Department would like to extend our appreciation to the staff of Norwich Free Academy, as well as all the students and spectators for their cooperation and safe evacuation of the event,” police said. “All threats are taken seriously by the Norwich Police Department and will be thoroughly investigated and those responsible will be held accountable.”
