Fire severely damages Old Lyme home

Old Lyme ― A fire on Wednesday badly damaged a home at 16 Buttonball Road and displaced three residents.

No injuries were reported in the 2:27 p.m. blaze. Old Lyme Fire Marshal David Roberge said firefighters arrived at the two-story home to find flames showing from the eaves of the home.

Old Lyme firefighters were assisted by departments from area towns and brought the fire under control by about 3:15 p.m. Roberge said the fire appears to have started in a screened-in porch. It had traveled into the walls and up to the attic.

The Red Cross aided the three occupants of the home. Roberge said firefighters were also able to save the two cats.

Public records show the home is owned by Catherine and David Johnston, but is a rental property.
